More Than Just Words Activation
To help healthcare providers confront implicit bias in cancer care, we created an immersive VR storytelling experience that allowed participants to step into the perspective of patients navigating the healthcare system. By combining technology, narrative, and reflection, the experience transformed bias education from a lecture into a deeply personal moment of empathy—encouraging healthcare providers to reconsider how everyday interactions can shape patient outcomes.
THE CHALLENGE
Implicit bias remains one of the most difficult challenges to address in healthcare. While many organizations offer training, traditional formats—slides, lectures, and workshops—often struggle to create the emotional connection necessary to inspire real behavioral change.
Healthcare providers are trained to make rapid decisions in high-pressure environments. But without the ability to truly experience how bias affects patients, education around the issue can remain abstract and theoretical.
The challenge was to create an educational experience that would move healthcare providers beyond awareness and into genuine understanding.
THE SOLUTION
Create an immersive VR storytelling experience that allows healthcare providers to see healthcare through the patient’s perspective.
By stepping inside these narratives, participants would experience the subtle but powerful moments where implicit bias can shape interactions, decisions, and outcomes.
The goal was not simply to inform—but to create a moment of reflection that would stay with providers long after the experience ended.
